May is National Water Safety Month and we have several events lined up to help spread awareness about how to stay safe in and around the water to prevent accidental drownings and to support swim lessons for children in need. Check out a few of our happenings!
1. The Race to Safety Is On
On Monday, May 6th, Stew and Kim Leonard hosted a press conference with U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, 3x Olympic Gold Medalist Swimmer, Rowdy Gaines, Yale swimming champ Ali Truwit, Stewie the Duck Swim School’s own Laurie Houseknecht, and Norwalk NAACP President Brenda Penn Williams. The media event helped raise awareness of the need for swimming lessons for kids and lifeguard trainings, and highlighted that Black children are 5x more likely to drown than their white peers. Stew, Kim, and Rowdy also announced a strategic partnership between Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation and Step into Swim, a program with the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, that is enabling the two organizations to award $400,000 in grants in 2024 that will provide 40,000 swim lessons for kids in need in NY, NJ, and CT!
