This American Red Cross course is designed for entry-level participants that wish to lifeguard at aquatic facilities with a maximum water depth of 5 feet. 

What You’ll Learn

  1. The knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 5 feet deep
  2. Provide care for breathing emergencies
  3. Provide care for cardiac emergencies
  4. Provide care for injuries or sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over

Prerequisites

Basic Requirements:

  • Minimum age: 15 years old
  • Swim 100 yards continuously
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
Complete a timed event (maximum time: 50 seconds):
 
  1. Start in the water
  2. Swim 20 yards
  3. Submerge to a depth of 4-5 feet
  4. Retrieve a 10-pound object
  5. Return to the surface of the water
  6. With both hands holding the object, walk or swim on your back 20 yards to return to the starting point
  7. Exit the water without using the steps or the ladder
